Those knowledgeable folks over at Pitch Fork recently compiled a rundown of the top 200 tracks of the 1990’s, and I think it’s fair to say that this is no mean feet.

Everything you’d expect – and hope – to see has been considered and the list reads like a ‘holy s**t was it that long ago!’ when that was released? Type of affair.

The top ten features the like of DJ Shadow, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Weezer, My Bloody Valentine and more. Top spot however, and as we all know, has to really nail it. The number 1 just has to be a record that really blew everything wide open, a piece of music that still hits you in all the right places today. So what stands head and shoulders above the other 199 releases?

Why it’s Pavement’s ‘Gold Soundz’ of course.

No words can describe how brilliant this piece of music is, and I’m not even going to try and attempt to. I’ll simply let Pitch Fork’s Mark Richardson explain.

“There are a lot of ways to think about the music of a decade. Sometimes when you sit down to make a list like this, you think about songs that seemed important– maybe they changed music or were emblematic of prevailing trends in culture. And then sometimes you think about songs that make you feel good whenever they come on. You hear the first few notes, remember how much the song does for you, the excitement builds, you want to sing along, and hey– they’re coming to the chorus now…”

A worthy chart topper, of that there is no doubt.

Is it really 21 years since Boston’s and indeed the Worlds freshest all boy troupe delivered Hangin’ Tough to the masses….

The song was the fourth single from the group’s second album of the same name, peaking at number one in the USA on September 9, 1989. It also stood atop of the UK singles chart and the song also became the first number one single of the 1990s.

But I have one question and indeed and answer that comes with it, and that is, does that make it better than this mind bogglingly awesome NKOTB knitted sweater?

The answer of course is NO.

In the future everyone dresses like this and it rules so bad.

Cassette Wallets by Marcella Focsci.

Now I love a lot of things in life, but I’d happily stand up and declare that two of the things I feel most passionate about, inexplicably drawn to as if some sort of huge magnet is pulling me towards them are Madonna and Money; so a wallet that brings both of these lifebloods together is a sure fire winner as far as I’m concerned.

These hand-made wallets were designed back in 2006 for the DesignBoom mart held in Tokyo, but they’re the sort of kitsch little collectable that will consistently sell due to it’s usability and practicality. The idea is a simple one really, dismantle the tape and remove the insides then join the plastic back together with a zip. Each design was usually a one off, which of course would also make it pretty easy to identify the culprit should your Italo Mega-Mix wallet go missing on a Saturday night.

You can still purchase these at the DesignBoom website’s Cassette Wallet shop I, however, prefer the straight up ghetto way of looking after one’s cash.

I’m not sure though, that I could have conjured up such an ingenious concept as Julio Cesar and Super Market’s Sonic Fabric concept which see’s old mix tapes and ‘best of’ compilations being used for a better purpose….fashion.
